Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is expected to find out today how long he is out for after his 27-minute cameo substitute appearance saw off Aston Villa yesterday but then aggravated the hamstring injury he suffered at Burnley.

The Spanish playmaker was introduced in the second half yesterday and within nine minutes put the Gunners in front from a free-kick but tweaked his hamstring scoring the second for Arsenal on 81 minutes.

Arsene Wenger said after the game: "I believe he is happy we won the game but he is concerned about his hamstring. We don't know yet whether it is a recurrence of the pull or whether it is just scar tissue. We will know more about it tomorrow [Monday]. If it is scar tissue it is a few days, if it is a recurrence of the pulled hamstring it is three weeks."

Wenger added that he feels he made the correct decision by introducing Fabregas, "I feel that I did the right thing, and would do it again. I put him on the bench and I knew before the game that if it was really needed, I would put him on. Had we been 1-0 up I would not have done it, but at the end of the day you do what you think will win the game. Aston Villa are a team which makes you nervy because you can be dominant and lose the game. You could think 'we were dominant and did not take advantage of it, so let's be cautious' - or you gamble a bit try to push it further and score. That is what I did."

Fabregas is now expected to miss Arsenal’s trip to Fratton Park on Wednesday night for the clash with rock-bottom Portsmouth.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been in irrepressible form this season, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists for Arsenal in 21 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League.
