Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti appears to be edging closer to Arsenal.

According to Tutto Mercato, Cagliari President Massimo Cellino received a phone call from Arsenal last night to enquire about pushing along the signing of the Italy goalkeeper.

And Marchetti missed a Cagliari friendly match yesterday, prompting insulting chants from fans.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is looking to bolster his crop of 'keepers in light of the unreliable form of Manuel Almunia and the error-prone performances of Lukasz Fabianski.

The Gunners have recently also targeted Fulham stopper Mark Scharwzer and Dutch World Cup goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg .

27-year-old Marchetti, who replaced the injured Gianluigi Buffon in the World Cup for Italy, is contracted to Cagliari until 2014 and is valued at €5M-7.5M

A wise move for Federico Marchetti ? He looks to be another error prone Fabianski.........Would you think Cagliari to release him if he is solid & stable? I read somwhere Cagliari wanted closer to 9 million-pounds ?

Why can't Wenger just get someone like Maarten Stekelenburg for around the same price 9 million-pounds?

Stekelenburg has already played in CL with Ajax so he aint coming
its between schwarzer and Marchetti

@ Jason.....I prefer schwarzer hands on down but Wenger is obviously using him as a stop-gap 2 years to allow Szczesny & Mannone (No.1 & 2 respectively) & he still very passionate about his youth project....I am worry & cannot comprehend why Wenger still belived Fanbianski had potential (to make okay but not suited for EPL games) but probably use him to just make up the gk numbers only.

I am not sure he's a top goalie...I'd prefer Schwarzer. And just how good is Arsenal's Sczesny? I think Manone does much better than Fabianski. He seemed okay when he stepped in for injured almunia and fabianski. I'd love to see him get more time.
