Arsenal's summer signing Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that he had the opportunity to join North London rivals Spurs three years ago.
The 25 year old has been an instant hit at the Emirates, adding not only an imposing physical presence at the heart of the Gunners defence but also adding five goals already this season.
In an interview with the News of The World, Vermaelen revealed, "Three years ago I had an offer from, yes Tottenham. But for me, that was too soon.
"In fact, in the summer, I was a bit surprised when my agent got the call for Arsenal.
"I had planned to stay for another year at Ajax. But when I heard the vision I wanted to be part of it."
With 26 Belgian caps to his name, Vermaelen also spoke of his admiration for Arsene Wenger's brand of football. "As I say that is one of the reasons I decided to join Arsenal."
