Neymar. Year to remember
The Brazilian Serie A 2011 season came to an end, with Corinthians being crowned champions after a dramatic two-horse race with Vasco de Gama, decided by only a one point margin. We now have a great chance to take a look at Brazil's top performing offensive players, as they are rated by IMScouting's Efficiency Report.
IMScouting's efficiency report generator calculates the number of goals plus assists, divided by the number of minutes that the player has played, at only league matches. In order to get into this list, a player must have reached at least 1500 minutes on the field, leaving only regular first-team players.
Leading the chart by a considerable margin is Fluminense and Brazil's International target striker Fred . Known to European fans mostly from his days with Olympique Lyonnais, the prolific striker returned to his homeland in 2009 after losing his place with the French giants, and has regained his notorious goal-scoring form. After starting the 2011 Championship badly, with a 5 game goal drought, Fred simply exploded with 22 goals and 4 assists in the next 25 matches, including two hat-tricks and the memorable 4 goals scored in Fluminense 's 5-4 win over Gremio. With a goal or assist to his credit every 84 minutes, Fred is the undisputable king of the Brazilian league.
With only a small margin between them, Santos ' attacking duo, Borges and Neymar , are at 2nd and 3rd place respectively. 31 year-old target man Borges has given the best season of his career, finishing as top-scorer of the tournament with 23 strikes and adding two assists (105.6 min average). Rising star Neymar has shown that he can be as effective as he is spectacular to watch, contributing 14 goals and 4 assists (108.7 min average), but even a magnificent offensive line comprised of the aforementioned duo alongside talented playmaker Ganso, couldn't help Santos in their terrible campaign, finishing 10th in the table.
Brazil's greatest future promise at the striker position, fantastic 22 year-old Leandro Damiao , is at 7th place (14 goals, 6 assists, 121.6 avg.) while his teammate at Internacional Porto Alegre, Brazil U-20 starlet Oscar, is at 15th (10 goals, 5 assists, 140.7 Avg.), making him the league's best producing playmaker.
Two times FIFA World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho , on his first season since returning to Brazil, is at 9th place (14 goals, 7 assists, 130.4 avg.) while Fred 's supporting man at Fluminense , ex-Betis forward Rafael Sobis, is one place ahead (10 goals, 2 assists, 129.4 avg.). The only foreign player to make it into the top 20 is the indefatigable Uruguayan striker, Sebastian 'El Loco' Abreu (13 goals, 2 assists, 136.9 avg.), who at the age of 35 is also the most senior player in the list.
Joining Neymar and Oscar as the third and last U-20 player in the list, is the much less hyped yet equally talented Wellington Nem (9 goals, 4 assists, 140.7 avg.). The 19 year-old Winger/forward is on loan from Fluminense to Figueirense, and in the first season of his professional career has been producing numbers as well as magic, marking him as one of the league's most exciting prospects.
