Hull City are preparing to make a surprise move for American star Freddy Adu , who is currently contracted to Portugese giants Benfica.

Adu burst onto the scene as a 14 year-old, making his debut in the Major League Soccer for DC United.  He was considered one of the hottest prospects in world football, but has so far failed to live up to the billing.

The attacker moved to Benfica in 2007 but has failed to make a real impact and has been loaned to fellow Portugese side Belenenses this season.  However, he has made only a handful of appearances during his loan spell and is yet to find the net.

Hull City manager Phil Brown is desperate to boost his attacking options as the Tigers face a relegation scrap during the second half of the Premier League season.  The News of the World reports that Benfica would be prepared to accept a £1.5m bid for Adu from Hull City .

With the World Cup on the horizon, Adu would likely welcome a Premier League move to boost his chances of selection.  He has already scored 2 goals in 10 games for the US national team.

it most certainly is. it is either hull or aria from greece

If he goes to either club, it is a gift from the gods. This kid hasn't deserved it lately, and this comes from a big fan. Don't see him doing great in the EPL, but he would be with either Eddie or Jozy, probably doing his best to make them score. This is on the opposite end of the spectrum from where US transfer news usually takes place.

This move would be awful for Freddy and a waste of money for Hull. He is a talented but limited one-way attacking midfielder. He would be better in a lower league where he would play.

It's not aria from greece, pedro it is ARIS FC from Thessaloniki Greece. The best club in Greece!

when i heard the phrase 'surprise move' i was expecting some brilliant player. why not think like a premier league club and go for big players like kris boyd from rangers, this guy doesn't sound good enough for city and in my humble oppinion, looks a waste of money

I wish Freddy the best, but this may not be the best fit for him right now. Check out my recent interview with Freddy here (faux?):
