Andriy Shevchenko
There were few surprises in last night's Champions League third round first leg matches, with comfortable wins for Dynamo Kyiv and RSC Anderlecht .
Andriy Shevchenko was on target as the Ukrainian side beat KAA Gent 3-0, while Anderlecht proved too much for The New Saints Oswestry , winning 3-1 in Wales.
Elsewhere, Sparta Prague edged past Lech Poznan 1-0, and Omonia Nicosia got a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw at home to RB Salzburg , courtesy of a penalty by former Newcastle, Portsmouth and Olympiakos striker Lomano LuaLua.
Zenit St Petersburg came away from their trip to Romanian side Unirea Urziceni with a goalless draw, despite the hosts playing much of the game with 10 men, while Bulgarians PFC Lovech and Slovakians Zilna drew one apiece.
Dynamo Kyiv 3, Gent 0 - Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium, Kyiv
Scorers: Dynamo Kyiv - Andriy Yarmolenko (19), Andriy Shevchenko (80), Denys Zozulya (90).
Man-of-the-Match: Andriy Yarmolenko , 20, estimated market value: €2.5M-5M.
IMScouting notes on the player: Yarmolenko is a fast and technical attacking midfield player with heaps of potential. He has a powerful shot with both feet, and he is always looking to break forward beyond the strikers and score goals. His pace enables him to play as a striker or a winger, but he has recently been playing on the left flank. He has a high work-rate and can run up and down the wing all game.
Kyiv leave it late but see off Gent
Dynamo Kyiv have one foot in the playoffs after a convincing win in the Ukrainian capital against Gent.
Andriy Yarmolenko gave the hosts a 19th-minute lead, with a Roman Eremenko cross making its way to the 20-year-old who finished neatly, rounding Gent goalkeeper Bojan Jorgacević.
Shevchenko doubled the advantage ten minutes from time, linking up well with Denys Garmash before slotting home, and Zozulya sealed the win in the dying seconds, running on to Shevchenko's pass and finishing with aplomb.
AC Omonia, 1 FC Salzburg 1 - GSP, Nicosia
Scorers: Salzburg - Gonzalo Zárate (8); Omonia - Lomana LuaLua (90).
Man-of-the-Match: David Mendes da Silva (Salzburg), 27, estimated market value: € 5M-7.5M.
IMScouting notes on the player: The Dutchman is an elegant player, who always looks to pass to feet and
play his way out of trouble. Has a good approach to his game, and is similar
in his play to Frank Rijkaard.
LuaLua rescues Omonia from home defeat
A crucial injury-time penalty by LuaLua saved Omonia Nicosia from the jaws of defeat and ensured that while Salzburg do have the away-goal advantage, the tie is still finely balanced going into next week's second leg.
Gonzalo Zarate gave the visitors a deserved lead in the eighth minute when his shot rolled under Omonia stopper Dragoslav Jevric. Mendes da Silva twice went close to extend the lead as Salzburg continued to dominate in the first-half.
But LuaLua came on after the interval and caused Salzburg havoc.
And he was rewarded for his efforts in injury time, slamming home from the penalty spot after Leandro was brought down in the box by Mendes da Silva, who dented an otherwise great performance.
The New Saints FC 1, RSC Anderlecht 3 - The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham.
Scorers: Anderlecht - Sacha Kljestan (7) Jonathan Legear (18), Matías Suárez (73); The New Saints - Craig Jones (52).
Man-of-the-Match: Matías Suárez (Anderlecht), 22, estimated market value: €2.5M-5M.
IMScouting notes on the player: The Argentine is an attacker with excellent technique who can change the game in a flash. He is very fast, has excellent control and good dribbling skills.
RSC Anderlecht killed off any hopes The New Saints had of producing a shock, with two early goals in Wrexham.
Sacha Kljestan opened the scoring, turning in Matias Suarez 's cross, and Legear extended the lead, blasting home from Mbark Boussoufa's pass.
Jones beat Silvio Proto at his near post to pull one back for the hosts, but Suarez headed home Legear's free-kick to restore the Belgians' two-goal advantage and put them firmly in pole position in the tie.
