Old Trafford goalkeeping coach Eric Steele reportedly recommended Neuer to Sir Alex Ferguson as a possible replacement for Edwin Van der Sar and the German keeper has been a target ever since.
Schalke are demanding around £10million for their young star, but United are prepared to pay that price.
39 year old Van der Sar is set to decide on his future in the coming weeks, with his retirement from the game a possibility.
