Casillas - World's top keeper

Real Madrid goalkeeper and Spain captain Iker Casilla has been voted the best goalkeeper in the world. On Monday, during the FIFA gala to be held in Zurich, the goalkeeper will receive his award. He has also been nominated as best goalkeeper for the Golden Ball, FIFA World Player and the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) awards.

FIFPro, an affiliated union of more than 50,000 players, has selected an elite eleven team. The other goalkeepers nominated were Victor Valdes (Barcelona), Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United), Julio Cesar (Inter), Pepe Reina (Liverpool) and Manuel Neuer (Schalke).

Casillas will travel by private plane to Zurich with team mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka , who will also attend the gala. The Portuguese and Brazilian stars will compete with Xavi, Iniesta and Messi for the FIFA World Player of the year award.

Casillas expressed his gratitude for the award. "Thank you all for the votes I've had. What I have achieved in recent years has been thanks to the work of all my colleagues at both Real Madrid and in the national team. It's an honor for me to receive these awards, but I have to work more and work hard because we have major challenges ahead."

Fifa is really starting to get annoying. These awards are suppose to be for which player had the best year not who is the best. Julio Cesar was easily the best keeper last year and Casillas was not. The cheap goal he gave up to Altidore, how many did he let in verse liverpool. First Kaka making the shortlist for player of the year and now this.

that is just ridiculous. atiba hutchinson had a brilliant year in the danish top flight. should he be contender for best midfielder? of course it has to be among the established household names normally considered the best. and yes casillas let in a lot of goals against liverpool. but with no defensive help whatsoever. it wouldve been 9 or 10 to zero hadnt it been for a string of brilliant saves from him. julio cesar has an incredibly tight-knitted defense in front of him. hell that team developed catenaccio THE most defensive style of play. Casillas, looking away for a very few blunders, made one incredible save after another. I dont know where youve been this year or if you are just biased but did you ever see casillas against sevilla? save of the decade if not of the century. and thats not just a coincidence, if you hit up casillas 2009 on youtube you will see how immense he has been.
I pray I can talk sense with you and that you actually respond to what I wrote instead of flaming me or whatever.

I think he deserved it and I agree with you wholeheartedly, lemmedasker.
To Norma, just because a gk has a good defense in front of him doesn't mean he's actually the best. Valdes is just a typical gk I know many who are better than him.
