The Cameroon Football Federation have reacted quickly to rumours in the African country that Benit Assou-Ekotto pulled out of the African Cup of Nations squad in protest over Paul Le Guen’s decision to omit Tottenham team mate Sebastien Bassong .
The Secretary General of the Cameroon Football Federation announced that Assou-Ekotto picked up a groin injury in Spurs’ 2-0 win over West Ham on Monday and will now miss the tournament in Angola.
There have been calls in Cameroon for Assou-Ekotto to report to the Cameroon medical staff to verify his injury which Spurs only informed the African national team by fax yesterday.
Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen was quick to replace the Tottenham left back with Gilles Augustin Binya who is currently on loan from Benfica at Neuchatel Xamax .
Assou-Ekotto was substituted in the match against West Ham in the 87th minute and replaced by Gareth Bale who is set to take his place in the Spurs side in the coming matches.
Sebastien Bassong has been impressive for Harry Redknapp’s team since joining from Newcastle in the summer and was expected to be part of the Cameroon squad after playing in three World Cup qualifiers earlier this season.
