Having hugely impressed at the Under-21 Championships in Sweden, Marcus Berg is likely to be a hot commodity in the summer transfer market, however Ajax have removed themselves from the race for the striker.
Reports in the middle of last week had suggested Ajax were close to a deal with FC Groningen but this has been rubbished by head coach Martin Jol.
Jol said yesterday: "I do not know where this story comes from. It is always in one or two newspapers but it simply isn’t going to happen.” The former Tottenham and Hamburg coach added: “we are always looking to strengthen ourselves, we will not fail."
Berg is set to be the top goal scorer at the Uncer-21 Championships after scoring seven goals in four games, including two in the semi-final defeat to England on Friday night.
On a possible move from Dutch minnows Groningen, the Swedish striker said: "I like the Spanish league, it's fantastic. The English is also good. You don't know when it will happen, but that is what you are dreaming about."
