Carlos Vela, brought to Arsenal by Dick Law
Sam Wallace reveals in The Independent today that Arsenal have unofficially filled the role of director of football at the club, a position vacated by David Dein two years ago.
Wallace writes: "Dick Law, who helped bring Gilberto Silva and
Carlos Vela to Arsenal, has become the club's fixer on transfer deals and the re-negotiation of contracts for existing players... The club are adamant that Law is not to be regarded as a director of football and that he is only a consultant to the club rather than a full-time employee. Law, a Fifa-licensed agent, has an office at the training ground and his main responsibilities are strategy, contract negotiations, administration and planning."
The Independent journalist adds: "Law is close to Wenger's chief scout Steve Rowley, who is a long-serving ally of the Arsenal manager and has played a key role in the transfer coups for players such as Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. Another of Law's projects is understood to be the establishing of feeder clubs for Arsenal around the world that would allow them access to the best young players."
Law was previously Arsenal’s scout in South America and then North America where he helped to establish the Gunners' scouting network there. He is in London two weeks a month where he deals with player contracts.
Yesterday, Croatian striker Eduardo signed a new “long-term contract” with the club, believed to be until the end of the 2013/2014 season and worth around 50,000 pounds-a-week.
