Drogba has been a thorn in the side of the Gunners defence
After his match winning performance against Arsenal yesterday, in Chelsea’s 3-0 win at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger may now look back with regret on the day he spurned the opportunity to sign Didier Drogba .
An article in French newspaper L’Equipe today reports that in 2000 Jacques Crevoisier recommended Drogba to Wenger and urged him to sign the Ivorian for Arsenal. (Jacques Crevoisier would go on to coach at Liverpool.)
Wenger’s decision not to sign Drogba can be easily explained when one realizes just how much the Chelsea striker has improved in the latter stages of his career. At Le Mans in 2000/2001, Drogba failed to score in 11 matches and in the following season, before moving to Guingamp, he scored just five goals in 21 appearances.
The Arsenal boss has had cause to regret not signing the Ivorian hitman in recent seasons as he has been a thorn in the side of the Gunners defence. Drogba has never lost to Arsenal and has now scored ten times in eleven matches against Chelsea’s London rivals.
