Danny Dichio
Former QPR and Sunderland striker
Danny Dichio has announced his retirement from professional football.
The 34-year-old has been at
Toronto FC for two-and-a-half Major League Soccer seasons and will continue at the Canadian club as academy coach and team ambassador.
Dichio said: "I'm really looking forward to this new chapter in my career, and I'm happy I get to do it here at
Toronto FC . It's a great opportunity given to me by [Toronto FC director of soccer] Mo [Johnston] and the front office and I'm excited to help this organisation in the years to come."
The 6.3ft striker scored three goals in 19 appearances during the 2009 season in which he was plagued with a number of injuries.
Mo Johnston added: "Danny has not only been an integral part of
Toronto FC , but also the city of Toronto from day one. Having Danny on board in his new capacity will also assist us in scouting not only for upcoming MLS games, but with the young talent that is here in Ontario for our academy."
Dichio had spells at QPR, Barnet, Sampdoria, Lecce, Sunderland, West Brom, Derby, Millwall, Preston and Toronto in a career that started in 1993/1994.
