Forlan - Set for Anfield Premier League return?
Rafa Benitez reportedly wants to bring
Diego Forlan back to the Premier League in an attempt to re-ignite Liverpool's season.
The former Manchester United hitman did not enjoy an overwhelmingly successful two year spell at Old Trafford. However, since moving to Spain, the experienced Uruguay international has been prolific for both Villarreal and now
Atletico Madrid .
Last season, Forlan netted an impressive 35 goals for Atletico and has already scored five this season, despite the side languishing near the foot of the Primera League table.
However, Atletico were knocked out of the Champions League and another chance in the Premier League might appeal to Forlan. Were he to move to Liverpool, the Uruguayan would team up with another former
Atletico Madrid striker, Fernando Torres.
Liverpool would have to spend big for Forlan, given that he has scored 22 international goals for Uruguay and twice won Primera League's Pichichi Trophy for the league's top scorer. Forlan is valued at around €30M.
Should Benitez fail to land Forlan, he may well turn his attention to another former Manchester United striker, Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy, currently at Real Madrid.
