Liverpool are preparing a bid for Palermo’s central defender Simon Kjaer , according to a report in The People today.

The tabloid claim "Liverpool are ready to kick off the race for rising Denmark star Simon Kjaer . The big defender, 20, wants a move to the Premier League and agents acting on his behalf have been instructed to secure a switch to a top-four club. The Reds have indicated an interest and People Sport understands they would be willing to make a bid of around £10m."

Kjaer reportedly has a release clause of 12 million euros (£10.8m) and he is reportedly eager to join Liverpool. A host of other clubs are also interested – including Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus.

The Danish international (6 caps) has been impressive since joining Palermo at the start of the 2008/2009 season. During this season so far he has played 11 matches, scored one goal and picked up four yellow cards.

IMScouting’s network of scouts in Italy describe Kjaer as a defender with "great leadership skills  he is athletically gifted, tall, very strong and well built. Kjaer also possesses great aerial ability and heading. He is a hot prospect with a bright future who can be a top level central defender, but still needs to improve his pace and technical ability."
