Reports in Holland this morning have claimed that Manchester City have sent scouts to watch Ajax right back Gregory van der Wiel in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old right back has been watched by representatives of City in action in Ajax’s successive 5-1 victories over Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem as well as Holland’s friendly matches against Italy and Paraguay.

Van der Wiel’s agent Hakim Slimani confirmed that "There has been no official contact between Ajax and Manchester City , but I cannot deny his performances have been closely followed by Manchester City."

Slimani added that van der Wiel has a contract until the end of 2011/2012, "which is why Gregory is not concerned with a transfer to another club... This season he is aiming to establish himself as a major player in Ajax."

Gregory van der Wiel has played 21 games for Ajax this season, scoring three goals and has also provided one assist. Video evidence of the Dutch international (7 caps) can be seen below.
