After Ben Foster failed to prove his credentials to take over from Edwin van der Sar long term in the early weeks of the season, Manchester United continue to be linked with some of the top young goalkeepers around Europe.

A report in The People this morning claims United have been watching Germany keeper Rene Adler , this follows transfer rumours in recent months linking the Premier League champions with Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Manuel Neuer (Schalke) and Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon).

Adler, 24, is the current Germany number one and played in the most recent two World Cup qualifiers against Russia and Finland. He has spent his whole career at Bayer Leverkusen and is contracted to the club until the end of season 2011/2012.

The Leverkusen custodian is highly rated in Germany, IMScouting’s network of scouts describe Adler as "an excellent goalkeeper with awesome reflexes. Adler has the potential to be the best goalie in Germany - he has amazing presence in the box, and his mentality is of the highest calibre. He is always 100% mentally ready for a challenge, and this has a positive effect on his team."

Video evidence of Rene Adler in action can be seen on the video below.
