Marcin Wasilewski

Last night’s eagerly anticipated match between Anderlecht and Standard Liege will be remembered for all the wrong reasons after a horror tackle from Axel Witsel on Anderlecht’s Polish right Marcin Wasilewski .

The tackle came midway through the first half and earned Witsel a straight red card.

We can now expect Wasilewski to miss at least the rest of the season and reports in Belgium question whether he will ever play again.

Video footage of Witsel’s horror tackle can be seen below.

This was a terrifying tackle in order just to injure the player. I really hope that Witsel will be banned from playing another football match.

Witsel should be banned to play for at least 6 months... he has destroyed the sports life of another player with a move which is clearly not to be allowed in football

Banned from the next match?
After such grievous bodily harm he should be disqualified for 2 years and Wasilewski should sue him in addition.

That's the most sickening leg break since David Busst's.

Witsel should be banned from playing any professional sport.

Surely a reckless challenge, but there is no obvious intent from Witsel to break Wasilewski's leg. In real time there is no way he could have had such intent and known the end result. Watch the clip in real time. There were exactly two seconds from the ball becoming 50⁄50 and the injury.

He came in recklessly to try and stamp the ball, but there is no way he could have known that Wasilewski's leg would end up at precisely that spot to suffer a compound fracture.

If no injury had happened, then it might not have been a red card.

The ref gave him the red card before he saw the injury or the extend of it. Clearly a very careless act. Nobody can ever prove if it was intentional but Im sure negligence can be proven. He should pay for it. Otherwise you can expect more behaviour like this from other scumbags. As of now, the punishment does not fit the crime.
Don't think so,September 04, 2009
After seeing this I will think twice about swooping to clear the ball, Its a terrible injury but in fairness to Axel Witsel only he knows whether he was going for the ball or not, from my point of view in that situation you lift your leg to block the ball anticipating that the defenders clearance will lift the ball. The other probibility is that he was indeed stamping down!
However, in a split second you make a movement, at that speed how can a player be spot on with the acuracy of a movement.
