This week’s Special Report utilizes the enormous amounts of data on the IMScouting system to discover which teams in Europe have scored the most league goals in the last ten minutes.

(It should be noted that this report only includes all the top European leagues that are ongoing and not those that have either finished or are close to completion, for example the Russian Premier League.)

Top of the table are Austrian side SK Rapid Wien, with 11 late goals in 22 matches and Swiss team FC Zurich have also claimed 11 goals in the last ten minutes of league matches in 18 games. Unlike Rapid, FC Zurich are top of the table and are four points clear of FC Basel in the Swiss Super League.

Two teams are also locked on 10 goals. OB Odense who are third in the Danish Superligaen and FC Timisoara are third in Liga 1 and are making a great first of challenging for the Romanian title despite being docked six points at the beginning of the season.

A number of more famous teams have scored nine goals in the last ten minutes of games this season, including three Spanish clubs: Valencia, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, two of whom are battling it out for the La Liga title. 

Of course, whilst these statistics prove the importance of fitness and scoring late goals, some of the teams here have scored late goals when their games have already been won. And these statistics can be taken to explain a bigger picture.

For example, Barcelona have scored nine late goals in La Liga this season and although this has only bought six more points to their total, they have come in games against Sevilla, Real Madrid and Espanyol, respectively their title rivals and local rivals.

Another example is Liverpool, who top the Premier League thanks to their hunger for the win late on in games. By looking at the match events of the Merseyside giants it is clear to see that late goals have been a feature of their title challenge. 

In two games (against Wigan and Middlesbrough) they have turned round losing positions to win and in total have claimed an 10 points in the last ten minutes of games. These ten points are the difference between Liverpool occupying first rather than fifth in the Premier League.

Please note, that this Special Report, like all the others on IMScouting, is updated automatically and since it is still early on in the season we can expect to see great changes as to which teams are banging in late goals.
