Investigating Jeff Bezos IQ Score: Is He the Business Einstein?

by Rosemarie Hardison

Jeff Bezos’ business success story has sparked many discussions. I don’t think he earned this only because he’s the founder and executive chairman of Amazon; it also has to do with his charismatic personality.

But have you ever wondered about Jeff Bezos IQ? You’re definitely not alone on this! I’ve undertaken rigorous research to unravel the mystery of Jeff Bezos IQ.

If you’d like to know what I’ve found, wade along with me through this article.

Why Does IQ Score Matter?

IQ, or intelligence quotient, tests gauge your ability to use information and logic while making predictions or answering questions. An IQ test will measure your short and long-term memory and how fast you can solve puzzles.

However, you might be more interested in why the IQ level matters. IQ tests can tell you how well a person could perform regarding a specific skill or a job.

That’s why the U.S. government and many universities use an IQ test to select students and recruits.

It’s like a secret window you voluntarily open to take an insightful look at your intelligence. Simply put, an IQ test can help us predict who can do what and how well.

What Is Jeff Bezos IQ Score?

It’s been estimated that Jeff Bezos has an IQ of 135 or more. If that’s an accurate number, it means he belongs to the top 1% of the population. Even though I couldn’t confirm if Bezos is a member of Mensa or not, I’ve found a couple of Mensa articles where they’ve mentioned Jeff Bezos.

Mensa represents the most intelligent community you can hear of. You need to score 132 or higher on the IQ test to become a Mensa member. I don’t think they would’ve written about Jeff Bezos if he weren’t at least one of their top scorers.

Besides, Jeff Bezos graduated in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University. At that time, Princeton was one of the top universities in the U.S. It ranked #4 to be more specific. Let me tell you that Princeton is ranked #1 as of 2022 (the year of writing the article) among the national universities and #16 globally.

In their book, The Bell Curve, Herrnstein and Murray explain that those who score high on mental tests “bunch up” in elite universities. This is because you need to get impressively high scores to attend these universities.

That score can be translated into an IQ score that falls within the top 1% of the population with exceptional intellectual abilities. Since Jeff Bezos is an elite university graduate, he’s probably one of the top 1%.

Additionally, Bezos was at the peak of Forbes’s wealthiest billionaires in 2020 and 2021. Keeping second place on the Forbes list in 2022 is still impressive considering the sluggish markets. As a result, I was tempted to find out more about Jeff Bezos IQ as a young child and teenager.

Was Jeff Bezos a Child Prodigy?

Luckily, I’ve come across one of Bezos funny childhood stories. When Jeff was a toddler, he got hold of a screwdriver. Guess what he did? He almost took apart his baby crib.

His mom, Jackie Bezos, tells us about another incident that made her realize he wasn’t an average boy. Jeff was about two years old with his mom at a nearby playground. Instead of enjoying his time on an amusement ride in the water, he kept watching the cables and looking into the water. He was clearly trying to figure out how it worked.

As a teenager, his passion for invention was crystal clear. He invented a security alarm system to keep his brother and sister out of his room.

Moreover, he invented other things in his laboratory, which used to be his family’s garage. He built a robot, a solar cooker, hovercraft, and lasers. For me, that’s stronger evidence for being a genius than an IQ test. Don’t you agree?

In addition, his love for inventions hasn’t faded yet, as he’s currently building the 10,000-year clock in Texas.

The Funniest Proof of Jeff Bezos High IQ

Based on research, there’s a strong connection between humor and intelligence. Have you ever seen photos of Albert Einstein depicting his childlike sense of humor? If you haven’t seen Einstein playfully sticking out his tongue, you can easily google these photos.

According to a group of Austrian researchers, it takes cognitive and emotional skills to produce humor, especially ironic humor. Those researchers also tell us that humor is a sign of verbal and non-verbal intelligence.

This takes us to the next question: Have you ever seen a CEO pose for a picture while jumping on a gigantic trampoline? That’s what Bezos did in 2003. That wasn’t all, he was also trying to keep a water bottle on his head throughout the photo shoot.

Things got even more hilarious when the bottle started leaking over his head. So, Bezos remarked: “Next time we do this, I think I’m going to need a stunt double.”

Does Jeff Bezos Compare to Einstein?

As far as I’m concerned, both have two main things in common. Both have never taken an IQ test. Still, the public majority is sure of their remarkable intelligence and abilities.

Some may even argue against that. They say that Bezos didn’t make scientific contributions like those made by Einstein. I’d simply argue back that Bezos and Einstein possess different types of intelligence.

Albert Einstein mainly enjoyed logical-mathematical intelligence. This made him skilled at solving abstract problems and developing equations.

On the other hand, Jeff Bezos may have both interpersonal and spatial intelligence. This made him able to understand visual information and create healthy relationships.

Still, Bezos believes that being wrong a lot and changing your opinions more often are signs of high intelligence.

The Bottom Line

I believe there’s a high probability that Jeff Bezos IQ score is more than 135.

Yet, when it comes to success, psychologists believe an extraordinary IQ isn’t the only factor. That’s what we can draw from Jeff Bezos Amazon business story. He has what it takes, apart from intelligence, like persistence, patience, and vision, to create his unique success twist.

Jeff Bezos summed it all up when he said, “I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all.”

So, I hope you all keep on trying no matter what!
